The underappreciated role of muscle in health and disease
Muscle plays a central role in whole-body protein metabolism by
serving as the principal reservoir for amino acids to maintain protein
synthesis in vital tissues and organs in the absence of amino acid
absorption from the gut and by providing hepatic gluconeogenic
precursors.

In 1946, At The Age Of Twelve, Richard
Bernstein Developed Type 1 Diabetes,
and for more than two decades,
he was what he calls, “an ordinary diabetic”—one
who dutifully followed doctor’s orders. Despite
his diligence with maintaining the disease, the complications
from his diabetes worsened over the years, and like
many diabetics in similar circumstances, he faced death
at a very early age. Though he was indeed still alive,
the quality of his life wasn’t good, and by the
time he reached his twenties and thirties, many of his
body’s systems began to deteriorate.

Book Review: Beating Diabetes for Type 1 or Type 2: More than 1000 Answers About Beating Type 2 Diabetes
"Two reasons to buy it now, your health and your pocketbook. Which reason is more important to you?"
Every month when I send out my "Diabetes Update" newsletter to about 20,000 subscribers it includes a section on Dr. Bernstein’s webcast. That's because Dr. Richard K. Bernstein's monthly webcast is one of the best resources we have to help us manage our diabetes.
The webcasts are live seminars with Dr. Bernstein answering questions from readers of his books and others of us who have diabetes. They are usually on the last Wednesday of each month starting at 7pm CST.
But we can't always connect at that time. I know that I have missed many because of my travels.
I'm also one of those people who find audio to be a relatively inefficient way to impart knowledge. I find it a lot quicker to learn something that I read.
Yesterday, I got my wish. My friend, Steve Freed, sent me a copy of Dr. Bernstein's book that compiles more than 1000 questions and answers from his webcast.
The full title of the book is Beating Diabetes Type 2: 1000+ Answers Your Doctor May Not Know or Tell You. Diabetes in Control Inc. just published it as an e-book. Steve Freed, who is both a pharmacist and a Certified Diabetes Educator, is the publisher of Diabetes in Control, a free weekly diabetes newsletter for medical professionals in diabetes care. Diabetes in Control sponsors Dr. Bernstein's monthly broadcasts.
As soon as Steve sent me a link to Dr. Bernstein's brand new e-book I began devouring it. Do I really need to say that I learned a lot? Of course, I did!
In fact, I can't imagine anyone not learning a lot from the book. I can imagine that many people would find areas of disagreement. But try as I might I haven't found any myself.
One of the most valuable and moving sections of the book is about hospitalization. About a year ago I wrote an article here, "Don't Allow Hospital Procedures to Impair Your Blood Sugar Control," based largely on Dr. Bernstein's earlier book, Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution.
I made a point to search out his answers on three of my "S questions," stevia, saturated fat, and statins. In a nutshell, his answers are yes, yes, and no, to which I couldn't agree more.
Searching is easy, because this is an e-book. Specifically, it is a Kindle app, which lets you search for any word or phrase.
Now, lots of people confuse the Kindle device (hardware) with the Kindle app (software). You don't need a Kindle to read a book provided as a Kindle app.
The Kindle app itself is free. And it runs not only on a Kindle, but also on an iPhone, an iPod Touch, an iPad, a Windows PC computer, a Mac computer, a BlackBerry, an Android device, or a Windows Phone 7.
And now, until the end of November, you can buy Dr. Bernstein's new book for $29.95. You can pre-order it online from RX4 Better Health. Next month it will be available from Amazon.com at $39.95, including Amazon's commission.
This gives you two reasons to buy it now, your health and your pocketbook. Which reason is more important to you?
